Reminder: The Review Panel, April 4, at Brooklyn Public Library
Reactions to Dana Schutz’s “Open Casket” at the Whitney Biennial – a letter to the Biennial curators went so far as to call for the destruction of the painting – and ensuing debate in the press and social media have had a completely galvanizing effect in the art world this week. One never knows, in the heat of such excitement, whether controversy will blow over as suddenly as it appeared or continue to resonate for years to come, but it seems a fair gamble that Black-versus-Schutz might be the Whistler-versus-Ruskin of our moment. artcritical organized an “enquête” of regular contributors, Review Panelists and special guests to state their feelings on the issue. And it is bound to resurface at the May 9 edition of The Review Panel at Brooklyn Public Library which will discuss the Biennial.
