Born in 1963, David Cohen iis a graduate of the University of
Sussex, and of the Courtauld Institute of Art. He has
written for many different publications, and types of publication,
including the leading British newspapers, The New York Times, art
and literary magazines around the world, and exhibition catalogues.
He has built up a reputation in a number of specific fields. He
has published extensively, for instance, on British sculpture, including
a monograph on Henry Moore and essays and reviews of such figures
as Anthony Caro, Anish Kapoor, Tony Cragg and Rachel Whiteread.
Equally, he is closely identified with the School of London painters,
writing on such figures as Lucian Freud, R.B. Kitaj, and Leon Kossoff.
Since moving to New York he has begun to focus on American art.
He has published articles, and organised symposia, about Alex Katz.
Another keen interest of David Cohen's is the history and theory
of art criticism. He has published scholarly essays on such figures
as Herbert Read and Roger Fry, convened a "Ruskiniad" in New York
City to mark the centenary of John Ruskin's death, and is the host
of an ongoing series of public dialogues with leading American artwriters,
the Craft of Criticism, which is held at the New
York Studio School. Interviewees have included Peter Schjeldahl,
Hilton Kramer, Peter Plagens, Donald Kuspit, and Dave Hickey. Cohen
has taught at various institutions, including the State University
at Albany.
