Christian Maychack: Flats

625 West 27th Street. 212 989 0156
Opens: 09/06/12, Closes: 09/06/12

In his third solo exhibition at Jeff Bailey Gallery, Flats, Christian Maychack tinkers with pictorial and physical space in a series of wall and floor objects in colors sure to summon the cafeteria spork. Combining wood—both furniture grade and found—with his signature marbleized epoxy clay, what appears to be surface design is in fact structural. This gives the work a fly-trapped-in-amber quality (or is it more chopsticks-stuck-in-bubblegum?). At the same time, there’s an off-kilter fluidity here created by such elements as the swirling epoxy and the wonky staccato of the wooden slats. Expect demented, high craftsmanship at its best.
