Judith Bernstein: Cabinet of Horrors

35 Wooster Street. (212) 219-2166
Opens: 10/13/17, Closes: 02/04/18

Judith Bernstein’s hard hitting visual rants against the Trump administration recall the frenzied desperation of anti-Vietnam War protest posters of the downtown scene of which she was part in the 1960s and ’70s, as attested to by the inclusion of an anti-Nixon piece from that period. The best energy in this work doesn’t come out as satire per se as the fury is hardly tempered by verbal wit but in the almost lyrical indignation of her gestural, calligraphic line. The political sentiments are, like her legendary screws, implicit and secondary. What we actually see is abstract expressionism in a gloriously and literally revolting state. DAVID COHEN
