In 1961 Thomas B. Hess described Stephen Pace as “a brilliant member of the second generation of New York School painters [who] burst on the scene in the early 1950s, fully made, as if from the forehead of the Statue of Liberty.” Pace, who died in 2010, is mostly celebrated for his freely drawn, brightly colored figurative and landscape works produced since the early 1960s. Berry Campbell have assembled a group of the powerful and persuasive early works in the AbEx vein that caught the attention of Mr. Hess.
