A number of recent shows accentuated the odd mix of remoteness and involvement artists must experience about war when they are not at the "actual" front. Many artists, evidently, are determined to delve into dramatic events about which they have passionate feelings. But when the artist’s only link to the subject is via mediated images, responses are inevitably permeated by a sense of fractured witness.
