At the opening of Susanna Coffey: Since 2001 (which I organized) at the New York Studio School, Barack Obama's triumph at the polls was still very fresh with visitors, who exuded a collective euphoria.
For the artist herself, a palpable feeling that the Bush administration had run its course provided a sense of closure to the body of work on view. "Since 2001" was both a marker in time - the paintings date from the last eight years - and a declaration of thematic intent.
