In Martha Rosler’s montages, which had been on display at Mitchell-Innes & Nash through October 11, there is also a strident opposition of figure and ground, but with no space left for doubt as to the remoteness of the one from the other, or the artist’s feelings about that remoteness.  Her images are stark, shrill juxtapositions of the privileges of First World peace and the deprivations of a Third World at war.
